As the recent flood waters receded the full scale of the disaster was revealed across huge areas of NSW and QLD, leaving thousands without a home. These areas were already in a housing crisis, with a chronic lack of affordable rental housing, resulting in rising levels of homelessness and rental stress.
SmartMeals was established in March 2020 as an emergency response to COVID-19, providing nutritious meals for people impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, while also keeping hospitality workers in jobs. Today we are continuing to provide ready-made meals to vulnerable people, made by food based social enterprises.
Food security remains a challenge for many people unexpectedly made unemployed through COVID-19, and for people who were previously experiencing poverty and homelessness. Social enterprises cafes were hit hard by COVID and these partnerships are helping them rebuild, providing training to their vulnerable staff. Please help us to keep taking action against hunger.
Setting up someone for tenancy success is a vital part of any homeless support service, but funding for household items is hard to come by. Making-a-Home is an initiative that supports frontline homelessness services to give people the best possible chance of a successful new start.
People are experiencing a crisis recently fuelled by the impacts of Covid-19 which saw rising rent and uncertain employment. With continuing under-investment in social and affordable housing, finding secure and safe accommodation is incredibly difficult, particularly for Australians already living on the margins.
“Goodna Street Life's crisis accommodation at Helens Haven (8 rooms) went under in the floods. We established a temporary evacuation centre for our tenants and other flood affected people who were being evacuated from their homes, made homeless in the floods. The grant is facilitating accommodation for people, providing bedding, food, clothing and essentials.”Steven PurcellGoodna Street Life
“Shining Stars Foundation is 100% volunteer based and we are supporting the homeless in flood affected areas across Macarthur, south Sydney and Camden NSW areas. We operate with 2 second hand vans, and volunteer’s vehicles, to distribute emergency food relief, frozen meals, non-perishable food hampers and much needed homeless packs to those sleeping on the streets.”Kylee BenthamShining Stars Foundation
“Our housing clients are young LGBTIQA+ people aged 16 to 25. We provide case management and support for 25 clients in transitional housing tenancies which includes assisting them in purchasing essential items to start the tenancy. This financial support will be invaluable in helping to set up our clients for a successful transition to independent living and the next stage of their lives.”Mish PonyTwenty10, Sydney
