Every neighbourhood has one.
The café where the barista knows your order. The place where parents catch up after school drop-off. Where freelancers set up for the morning. Where friends reconnect. Where community noticeboards fill with local events and fundraisers.
Cafés have always been more than somewhere to grab a coffee. They’re places where communities gather.
That’s why, for the past 16 years, CafeSmart has asked one simple question: what if those everyday moments could become something even bigger?
On Friday 7 August, hundreds of cafés across Australia will donate $1 from every coffee sold, with every dollar directed back into the communities where it was raised. It’s a simple idea, but one that has created extraordinary local impact.
Together, the CafeSmart community has raised more than $2.5 million, funded 768 grassroots organisations, supported more than 120,000 people and generated an estimated $8.9 million in social impact.
But CafeSmart has never really been about the numbers.
It’s about what happens after the coffee is poured.
When someone orders a flat white in Canberra, a young person can access crisis support. When a customer grabs a takeaway in Sydney, a family might receive emergency food or Christmas hampers. Across Western Australia, a morning coffee has helped fund everything from mobile showers and outreach libraries to veterinary care for people experiencing homelessness. In regional Victoria, it has helped people stay housed by funding transport, community meals and practical support that builds independence.
Every community is different. That’s why every CafeSmart grant looks different too.
Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution, StreetSmart works with grassroots organisations already embedded in their communities. They know the people, they understand the local challenges, and they know where support will make the biggest difference. CafeSmart simply gives them the resources to respond.
That’s what makes cafés such an important part of the story.
Every day, cafés bring people together.
They create places where neighbours connect, friendships grow and communities take shape. Once a year, they become something else as well. They become fundraisers, advocates and champions for the people doing it toughest in their own neighbourhoods.
This year, we’re inviting coffee lovers to be part of that story too.
Alongside each café’s $1 donation from every coffee sold, many participating venues will also invite customers to make a Double Shot of Generosity by matching their café’s donation. It’s a small gesture that doubles the impact, helping local cafés raise even more for the organisations supporting people experiencing homelessness in their own communities.
At a time when both small businesses and community organisations are navigating increasing pressure, that spirit of collective action matters more than ever.
No one café can solve homelessness.
No one organisation can either.
When cafés, customers, roasters and grassroots organisations all play their part, something remarkable happens. A morning coffee becomes emergency accommodation. It becomes food relief. It becomes outreach. It becomes housing support. It becomes hope.
