people every day are turned away without housing that they sought
Housing ends homelessness. It’s a fundamental human right and the foundation of a happy, stable, and productive life. Yet right now, thousands of people are struggling to find an affordable place to live, often turned away from services and now facing the reality of homelessness.
We’re changing this, together. Join us in a collective response to help people maintain and access a place to call home.

“We are witnessing a lot more individuals and families couch surfing, living in overcrowded dwellings, living in cars, and rough sleeping. More and more people are simply out-priced of the rental market”

“People sleeping rough experience huge barriers when it comes to linking with housing support due to the unstable nature of their situations whether it be sleeping rough, in cars, or intermittent couch surfing”

Try overcoming trauma while living in a tent. Imagine trying to get a job without a permanent address, or keep up with school without a safe place to sleep each night. Without housing, ending your homelessness is simply impossible.
In the grip of a homelessness and housing crisis, people are being turned away from emergency housing, can’t get a foot in the door of the rental market, and are cycling through the homelessness system without an end in sight.
A home of your own is a fundamental building block that enables people to recover from trauma and other causes of homelessness, build a sense of security and stability that protects mental health and wellbeing, and be able to create the next chapter of their choosing. Housing is a human right, and a critical part of ending homelessness.
We pool donations through collective giving, with funds distributed at the end of the campaign. Your donation will be helping provide outreach to connect people with housing services, preventative support like bill and rental assistance, essential furniture to create liveable homes, and funding to keep housing programs running.
“With StreetSmart’s support, we’ve been able renovate 10 cottages that have sat unused for over 10 years. This enabled them to be brought up to a standard so that women over 55 – one of the fastest growing cohorts facing homelessness – could move into them.”

“This funding is helping young people exit homelessness into safe stable housing by providing them with the necessary support and resources to achieve their personal goals.”

Andrew* has experienced sleeping rough in his car, couch surfing with friends and family, less than ideal shared housing experiences, and couldn’t afford private rental on his own. Andrew was able to access emergency accommodation and has since moved into his own public housing tenancy. Because Andrew had experienced homelessness since 15 and had very few supports, he wasn’t able to access furniture or household goods. While Andrew was able to access donated furniture, the delivery fees meant a choice between furniture or food and rent. The StreetSmart grant delivery fee, allowing him to set up his home. Since the assistance, Andrew has had a stable tenancy and has started applying for employment.

Olivia* first experienced homelessness at 18 years, arriving in Australia as a refugee. Now 24 years old she has significant mental health issues and has cycled through emergency accommodation, hospital, prison, and sleeping rough. Through the Adelaide Zero program Olivia* moved into a public housing tenancy with very few possessions. A StreetSmart grant enabled Olivia to access a table and chairs, sofa and television for her house, making it feel more like a home, assisting to sustain a tenancy. With a stable home, Olivia has begun studying and is free from prison and hospital admissions.
