TipJar tours Australia once again! our wonderful partners at The Alternative Dairy Co, are helping raise awareness and funds for local responses to homelessness. Focusing on prevention, funds are helping provide training and employment opportunities to at-risk cohorts.
‘The Alternative Championship – Team Edition’ tour has been generating buzz in Canberra, Sydney, Hobart and Brisbane since November last year. With sights set on Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth over the next few months, things are only just heating up! The events showcase the very best barista skills through a bunch of awesome group competitions. Through ticket sales and raffles, donations are collected for TipJar with the local charity recipients featured during the events.
It’s corporate fundraising, advocacy, and collaboration at its best! Check out some shots from the tour destinations so far below.
Funds staying local to provide training and employment opportunities
So far, the latest tour has resulted in 4 grants that are helping to create and sustain hospitality job training opportunities for vulnerable and at-risk people. The programs are helping change the story for people who face barriers to employment and financial security.
Education, employment, and financial security are key protective factors against homelessness, and poverty, yet opportunities to be trained, up-skilled, and mentored can be hard to access and engage in for those who face complex challenges including poor mental health, disability, trauma, housing insecurity, and non-english speaking backgrounds.
”The grant will be used to run an entry level barista program for clients moving into affordable housing. The participants face many challenges, including mental health issues (depression/anxiety), lack of support from family and friends (isolated/lonely), unemployment and housing instability as many of the residents cannot afford adequate housing.

“The timing for this grant couldn’t be better. It will directly support the training of migrant and refugee women, who face the highest barriers to employment due to language barriers, lack of qualifications, or the necessity for flexible hours.” – Stepping Stone Cafe, ACT (Ngunnawal Country)
“This helps us continue to provide training and individualised wrap around support to people in our community who are facing significant barriers to employment, with a focus on people living with a disability. The additional training will improve participants’ chances of securing employment outcomes in industry.” – Hamlet Cafe, TAS (Nipaluna Country)
