CafeSmart – It’s All About Your Local Community

By CafeSmart, Community Grants, Grant Impact

Community Care Volunteers

Our CafeSmart event takes place during Homelessness Week (1st -7th August), and it’s more important than ever this year as the cost-of-living surges, and local homelessness services are swamped by people seeking help. This is why our small community grants are vital for funding Emergency Relief, Food Relief, and Material Aid Programs, to offer immediate financial support to those in crisis.

SmartCare – Supporting Frontline Workers to Deliver Crisis Care

By Community Grants, Grant Impact, News, StreetSmart News

For over two years the community sector has been on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic and has been caring for our community’s most vulnerable. We have seen them step up, protect lives and help people through the most difficult circumstances. To recognise frontline workers and the personal toll this work has on their health and wellbeing, in 2020 we set up our SmartCare initiative. To date we have made $67,000 of grants to 26 organisations, and we need your support to do more in 2022.

StreetSmart Supports Inclusion, Connection and Opportunity

By Community Grants, Grant Impact, News, StreetSmart News

Research, and our own lived experiences, tell us that more frequent social contact is associated with higher life satisfaction and better, overall health and wellbeing outcomes. Conversely, social isolation and loneliness can have significant, negative impacts for many people’s health and wellbeing. In May, as part of our Collective initiative we partnered with a local philanthropic Foundation to support 8 social inclusion programs across Metro Melbourne.

Youth Homelessness Matters

By Community Grants, Youth

The past two years have been difficult for young people, and particularly for young people experiencing homelessness or severe disadvantage. Sectors of the economy which employ young people (retail, hospitality, arts, recreation and micro enterprises) were shut down, and education opportunities disrupted, compounding already high unemployment rates for certain cohorts including migrant and refugee communities. As the economy has opened up marginalised young people have been hard hit by rising rents and a return to below poverty line income supports, they need targeted opportunities.

StreetSmart Supporters Step Up to Fund Vital Relief in Flood Zones

By 20 Years Highlights, Community Grants, Grant Impact, Recovery Fund, StreetSmart News

When a natural disaster strikes and the impact is felt as wide-spread as the recent floods, we can feel overwhelmed. As individuals it’s often hard to know where to direct our support. How do we know who is in the most need? Who can we trust to get the job done? Will my small donation make a difference? These are all valid questions, especially in the immediate aftermath. Recent experiences of people waiting for bush fire relief and assistance resulted in many people being put off from donating, supporting the responding charities. This is understandable, but ignores the fact that  thousands of volunteers and hundreds of local organisations are jumping straight in to assist people, and they need our support.

The starting of a new school year is a stressful and anxious time for low-income families
experiencing financial hardship. With children starting back at school, and young people trying to stay engaged in education and training, the costs really add up quickly and come all at once. No parent wants their child to miss out, and many young people who are forced to live independently want to stay in education and complete their studies. Read More

Anti-Poverty Week – We should all fight to end Poverty

By Community Grants, COVID-19, Homelessness in the news, Making a Home, StreetSmart News

In Australia, there are more than 3.24 million people or 13.6% of the population living below the poverty line. That includes 774,000 children or more than 1 in 6. In a country like Australia, this doesn’t have to be the case, but successive Governments have ignored the warning signs and continue to ignore the policies that could drastically improve the lives of people on low incomes. Poverty, hunger, homelessness and domestic violence are all interwoven, and all impact someone’s health, well-being, life expectancy and opportunities. It’s very bad for the person, and for us all, yet our Governments chose not to act. Read More
